A double feature from one of my favorite filmmakers.</p> <p>A Matter of Life and Death, with David Niven, which is the tits. No hyperbole here. It’s romantic, moving, clever, and inventive in it’s design and execution. When I was a kid, I saw this on TV one day and was mesmerized. Years later, when my obsession with Michael Powell was blooming, I discovered to my delight that he also made this movie, which I had nearly convinced myself was only a dream.</p> <p>Also included is Age of Consent, his last film. His career in England tanked because of Peeping Tom (which is now roundly considered a masterpiece) so he relocated to Australia and made a few more films there. I haven’t seen it yet, but it stars James Mason, a favorite, and a very young and very nude Helen Mirren. Word.
